@Garry Conn - I suppose the problem with a lot of commentators is that they are really quite lazy. Too lazy to read the post properly. To lazy to see what others have said in their comments and just too damn lazy to take the time to formulate a decent comment of their own and so all they do is whip a few words together and hope for the best. Of course, you also have those who think that by leaving a comment they at least will get a link back to their site, not realizing that the bulk of the blogs use the nofollow attribute and they are therefore wasting their time. If only they did the right thing and left a good quality comment, perhaps things would be different for them. Oh well, their loss.

Whilst I agree that blog commenting can lead to an increase in traffic it all depends on the quality of the comment itself. I doubt very much that comments such a 'nice post, informative post or wow you have given a lot of useful information etc. will lead to many visitors. On the other hand, your comment is more likely to increase traffic if it is informative and adds to the original post as others are more likely to click your link to see who the great commentator really is.
